How do fireflies make their butts glow? Through a light-forming reaction involving a molecule called Luciferin!

Luciferin is a name given to the group of light-emitting compounds found in bioluminescent organisms.

Light is generated when these compounds undergo an oxidation reaction catalyzed by an enzyme called Luciferase.

In fireflies, when Luciferin + Luciferase mix together in the presence of oxygen and ATP (cellular fuel) - the chemical reaction gives off energy in the form of yellow-green light! The wavelength of this light = 560nm.

This same compound, named D-Luciferin or Firefly Luciferin, is commonly used in cell-based assays as a bioluminescent reporter for studying gene regulation/function, cell viability, and in vivo imaging!
